Teaching Rhetoric

In the clip on the left, from the first week of our unit, I provide a mini lesson on rhetorical strategies building on examples student's used to convince me (in character as a 4 yr old) to eat broccoli. The intention behind the activity was to give students a personal experience of using rhetorical strategies before labelling what that strategy was. Here, I teach the mini lessons on what the strategies are drawing form the examples are before delivering a direction set for their next activity, transferring that experience into identifying rhetorical strategies in a text, image or video. Analysing the data from student work showed me that the majority of students require further support accurately identifying rhetorical strategies as they move into attempting to use them themselves.
