Argumentation Hopscotch
Argumentation Hopscotch
In reading student drafts, I noticed that many students still had challenges identifying the points they were making and evidencing them correctly. I decided to respond by teaching argumentation with hopscotch. Students were asked to come up with a simple claim and develop 3 premises ( 1 appealing to logic, 1 appealing to emotion and 1 appealing to credibility) in support of that claim. I explicitly taught them connecting (and, secondly, another reason) and concluding (therefore, so, in conclusion) vocabulary so that they could develop their skill of indicating to the reader what they points they were making are and when they are providing a conclusion. Below you can see their argumentation hopscotches. The middle group went above and beyond including pros and cons to both. When asked for feedback on the quarter this was the activity students reflected they learned most from.
